How long does it take to learn French?

Is French hard for English speakers?

Easy to read, harder to hear. Nothing new to read, but é, è, ê, ë, à, ù, î, ô and the cedilla ç all change pronunciation or meaning.

The parts English speakers usually find hardest:

• Silent letters and liaison — Most final consonants are silent, but they come back when the next word starts with a vowel. Spoken French runs words together, so hearing where one ends is the real challenge.
• Nasal vowels — Sounds like those in "un bon vin blanc" have no English equivalent, and confusing them changes words entirely.
• Two auxiliary verbs in the past — Most verbs form the perfect with avoir, but a set of movement and reflexive verbs use être, and then the participle has to agree with the subject.
• The subjunctive after set triggers — Expressions like "il faut que" and "bien que" force a separate verb form, and the list of triggers has to be learnt rather than reasoned out.
