How long does it take to learn Galician?

There is no official study-hour figure published for Galician. As a rough guide, the US Foreign Service Institute budgets 600 to 750 hours for the languages closest to English and around 1,100 for those further away. Holding a simple conversation comes much sooner than full proficiency.

Is Galician hard for English speakers?

Easy for English speakers, very easy if you know Spanish or Portuguese. Latin, including ñ and the digraphs ch, ll and nh. Fully familiar to any English reader.

The parts English speakers usually find hardest:

• The personal infinitive — Galician conjugates the infinitive for person, a feature it shares with Portuguese and which lets one word express "for us to arrive".
• No compound perfect tenses — Where Spanish says "he cantado", Galician uses the simple past. The "have done" construction English speakers reach for simply is not available.
• Pronouns attach after the verb — The default position for object pronouns is on the end of the verb, and only certain trigger words pull them in front.
• Gheada and seseo — In much of Galicia the g is pronounced as a breathy h and c and z merge with s, so the spoken language can sound quite different from the written standard.
