How long does it take to learn Polish?

Is Polish hard for English speakers?

Hard — one of the tougher European languages. Latin-based with nine extra letters (ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż) and no q, v or x. Readable on day one, though the digraphs take practice.

The parts English speakers usually find hardest:

• Seven cases — Nouns, adjectives, pronouns and numerals all change endings across seven cases, including a vocative used for addressing people directly.
• Consonant clusters and sibilants — Words like "szczęście" stack consonants English never combines, and Polish distinguishes three ranks of hissing sounds where English has only one sh.
• Verbal aspect — Almost every verb comes as a perfective and imperfective pair that must be learnt together, and the pairing is often irregular.
• Masculine personal plurals — Plurals split according to whether the group includes men, so verbs and adjectives take different forms for a group of men than for anyone else.
• Numbers that decline — Counting is not neutral in Polish: the noun after a number changes case depending on the number, so "two", "five" and "twenty-two" each behave differently.
