How long does it take to learn Turkish?

Is Turkish hard for English speakers?

Hard — very regular, but built on completely different logic. Latin since 1928, with ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş and ü, and no q, w or x. Spelling is perfectly regular, so pronunciation follows from the page.

The parts English speakers usually find hardest:

• Agglutination — Suffixes stack in a fixed order onto a root, so one long word can carry what English needs a full clause for. The rules are exceptionally regular once learnt.
• Vowel harmony — Every suffix reshapes its vowels to match the word it attaches to, following two-way and four-way harmony rules. This is why the same ending appears as -de, -da, -te or -ta.
• Six cases — Case suffixes replace English prepositions, marking to, from, in and the definite object.
• Evidentiality with -miş — A dedicated suffix marks whether you saw something yourself or heard about it, a distinction English can only add with extra words like "apparently".
• Relative clauses built from participles — There is no word for "which" or "that". Turkish turns the whole clause into a participle placed before the noun, so sentences have to be assembled back to front.
