What does CEFR B1 mean?

B1 is the CEFR threshold level, where you can cope independently with most situations that arise while travelling, follow clear standard speech on familiar topics, and produce connected text about your experiences, opinions and plans.

What can you do at CEFR B1?

At CEFR B1 you can typically do the following:

• Handle most situations that come up while travelling where the language is spoken
• Follow the main points of a clear radio or television programme on a familiar topic
• Write a connected personal letter describing experiences and impressions
• Explain and briefly justify your opinions, plans and hopes
• Take part in an unprepared conversation on topics you know well

How long does it take to reach CEFR B1?

Reaching CEFR B1 from a standing start typically takes 350-400 guided learning hours.

A learner at this level generally has an active vocabulary of 2,000-3,000 words (commonly cited estimate).
