What does CEFR C2 mean?

C2 is the highest CEFR level, where you understand virtually everything you read or hear, summarise information from different sources coherently, and express yourself precisely and spontaneously in complex situations. It does not mean native-speaker perfection.

What can you do at CEFR C2?

At CEFR C2 you can typically do the following:

• Understand virtually everything you hear or read, including specialised material
• Summarise information from several spoken and written sources into a coherent account
• Take part effortlessly in any conversation, recognising colloquialisms and regional usage
• Express fine shades of meaning precisely, even in complex situations
• Present a clear, smoothly flowing argument in a style suited to the audience

How long does it take to reach CEFR C2?

Reaching CEFR C2 from a standing start typically takes 1,000-1,200 guided learning hours.

A learner at this level generally has an active vocabulary of 12,000-16,000 words (commonly cited estimate).
